This perspective is based on viewing the solution as an integral element of a complex organisation of people and technology (socio-technical system). We approach the design and functionality of a system within this complex organisation of other technologies, physical surroundings, people, procedures, etc. that together to make up the 'socio-technical' system.

Business environments are composed of a complex web of interactions that can not be accurately described with a limited number of parameters or characterising variables. All current approaches, solutions and methodologies, however, take a ‘reductionist’ view wherein they strip down the complexity by 'leaving out' many aspects.

Such reduced and simplistic modelling offers at best an incomplete, at worst a flawed analyses of the environment. Strategies, forecasts, designs and adaptations based on reductionist models inevitably fall short of their goals, so much so that we do not expect it otherwise.
